John Martyn wrote and recorded this album whilst in the process of divorcing his wife Beverley. Martyn's record label delayed the release of the album for a year after declaring it was too sad, but Martyn responded 'Please get it out! I don't give a damn how sad it makes you feel It's what I'm about: direct communication of emotion'. The album includes tracks such as
