This is the first time I have seen the glazes laid onto a flat tile without clay walls to contain them

Wheeling Seahorse Tile Dansk and othersThis vintage tile was made at the Wheeling Tile Company (1913 1960) in Wheeling West Virginia. It displays an underwater scene with a seahorse within a glazed brown border. Decorated in a squeezebag technique the manufacture of these tiles was time consuming. This tile has an old cork backing so that tile tile could be used as a trivet. A few small flakes around the edges but in very good condition.
