Hand thrown in stoneware, the jar is coated in a creamy white slip before being freely decorated with expressive iron brown brushwork, combining bands of geometric ornament with calligraphic characters and stylised natural motifs. Cizhou wares have been produced in northern China since the Song Dynasty
