A medal constructed of zink with a gun metal coloured coating, the concave obverse features a NSDAP eagle grasping a swastika with a laurel branch behind, the reverse shows the text WINTERSCHLACHT IM OSTEN 1941 42 (WINTER BATTLE IN THE EAST 1941 42), above a crossed sword and branch, a helmet and stick grenade rest below the medal loop, the outer ring finished in a polished silver
